A Bit About Us
Greetings from the beautiful shores of Lake Arrowhead Community in North Waterboro!
Barb and I have been so excited that God has called us to minister with and among you at Bar Mills Community Church! From my first encounter with the Search Committee to our service of worship on July 8th, Barbara and I have been filled with great anticipation and expectation of what God the Holy Spirit is going to do and accomplish in our midst!
We are truly anxious to see God’s Will unfold as we share together this new journey the Lord has laid before for us.
I was raised United Methodist and at the age of 14 I found new life in Jesus Christ. Later, I, was nurtured in my faith by a loving Baptist pastor and congregation. My growth experience has been to understand that the degree to which the world around us sees God's love in us and, especially through us, is the degree to which the world will find our faith attractive and compelling. I would rather be guilty of showing too much compassion in the context of sound biblical teaching and truth than of not demonstrating enough compassion and being judged by God. Faith, conviction, and integrity are an essential part of a daily walk with God but never in a legalistic manner which neglects the spirit and truth of what Jesus and the apostles taught.
Theologically, I am conservative, evangelical and I believe in the authority and inerrancy of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16). Worship, for me, is finding a balance between the priority of sound scriptural teaching, music and a vibrant experience of the Holy Spirit.
My undergraduate degree is in Bible and Theology. My Master’s degree is in Christian Counseling, Conflict Management and Theology, and my Doctorate is in Religious Studies, with a minor in Counseling. I am a certified in counseling, Stress and Trauma Care and I have taken Advanced Evangelism Studies through the Billy Graham School of Evangelism.
Barbara was in Bank Operations for eighteen years including managing one of ten national Cash Vaults for Key Bank. She was an Operations Consultant for a credit union for six years and is an experienced bookkeeper.
Barbara and I have been married for 46 years and we have four grown children, the oldest two being my stepchildren. Our son, the Rev. Richard Barnes is a former pastor and missionary and is now the Senior Chaplain at a Federal Detention Center for Illegal Aliens in Calexico, CA, and his wife, the Rev. Mercy Gonzales Barnes is an ABC Regional Missionary to Latin America and one of the team to Cuba. Our daughter Patti is a teacher, former Guidance Counselor and her husband is a Civil Engineer. Our son Jason, is a private healthcare provider with his EMT certification and is a studio musician in Illinois and Missouri. Our beloved son Matthew, an accomplished Chef, went to be with our Lord in 2011. We have ten wonderful grandchildren.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Chuck and Barb
